If the best rock'n'roll bands are also the most unpredictable ones, then The Libertines have been the finest on the planet for the last two years.

The journey that the band's co-writers Pete Doherty and Carlos Barat, together with drummer Gary Powell and bassist John Hassall, have taken from London's gutters and squats to its star-studded awards shows isn't your standard rags to riches tale.

Most notoriously, there was Doherty's spell at Her Majesty's Pleasure after being found guilty of burgling Barat's house.

Doherty's actions had become increasingly erratic over the previous months, culminating in the rest of the band deciding to go on tour without him.

Pete finally admitted to the root cause of his problems in an interview with London's Evening Standard. "Yes I'm a heroin addict, yes I'm addicted to crack cocaine, and I don't know what to do.

"When I was arrested for burglary, they found traces of opiates and crack cocaine in my blood. I'm all cut up, unsure, I don't know what I'm doing, I need a good kicking and I need some help."

It seems that help has been forthcoming - hatchets have been buried, Pete is back in the band and The Libertines are back to normal. Though whether any band who once had a 70 year old drummer called Mr Razzcocks can ever be described as 'normal' is a moot point.

Musically, the band have matured from the vital breakneck debut single What A Waster to the beautiful recent release Don't Look Back Into The Sun.

But just when the world thought they were going straight, they started to hang around with Cockernee stereotypes Chas & Dave; Pete launched an unhinged side project called Wolfman And The Side Effects; and Carl fractured his cheekbone falling over in the bathroom.

Ex-Suede head Bernard Butler will be replacing The Clash's Mick Jones in the producer's chair on their follow up to the raw and raucous debut album Up The Bracket. Whether that will lead to a change of musical direction remains to be seen.
