The story of the Postal Service can pretty much be summed up in their name — Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard and Dntel's Jimmy Tamborello sent each other tracks via snail mail, and the rest is history. So, just in time for the tenth-anniversary reissue of their unlikely smash album Give Up (and their reunion tour), that history is getting a rather dramatic re-telling ... courtesy of the folks at Funny Or Die.
In the brand new clip, the duo takes us back to 2002, when Tamborello supposedly help open auditions to find a Postal Service frontman, with the help of a delightfully douche-y Sub Pop rep named "Dave" (played by comedian Jon Daly), who lets it be known that "We're here to find you a partner to surround you with talent, so your weird genius sh-- can do its thing."
The Postal Service Auditions from Ben Gibbard
Over the course of the day, a veritable who's-who of talent — Blink-182's Tom DeLonge, Foo Fighters' Nate Mendel, an unhinged Moby, comedian Marc Maron and former Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan, to name just a few — take the stage, though it's a wild card, "Weird Al" Yankovic, who really steals the show with an accordion-tinged take on "We Will Become Silhouettes."
Finally, Gibbard shows up to sing a straightforward version of "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight," and though Tamborello is swayed, Dave isn't so sure ("You sure you don't want to go with the accordion guy? He rocked.") Of course, we all know who ended up fronting the band, but one can always wonder what might have been if Yankovic had gotten the gig.
The Postal Service will kick off their reunion tour on April 9 in Reno, Nevada, and they've also been confirmed to appear at several U.S. festivals, including Coachella and Sasquatch.
