The Rolling Stones could release songs from their archive for decades if they chose. According to the band's 20-year veteran bass player Darryl Jones there are lots of unreleased recordings in the vault.
Jones says that the two new tracks on the recent 'GRRR' album were the only new tracks recorded recently but going back 20 years there is a goldmine of unreleased material by the Rolling Stones. "We just worked on those two but when I think back about the recording that I have done with them over the years there is still a lot of stuff that no-one has heard," Darryl told Noise11.com. "There is still a lot of very good stuff, 'A Bigger Bang' sessions, going right back to 'Voodoo Lounge', which was my first record. Everything that we recorded did not make it onto that record. There are some other really great pieces there".
Darryl Jones is currently on tour in the UK with Australian supergroup The Dead Daisies and expects more Rolling Stones dates will be announced soon. "I am hoping that that is going to come soon. There are rumblings, like there always are, but I'm hoping that there's going to be more," he said. "I feel like the band is playing really great right now. I felt we had the momentum of the previous year. I think it's coming together. I don't think we've sounded bad since I've been in the band, which is actually more than 20 years since I've been with the band. Right now it just gels. At Hyde Park we were really pretty good I think".
The 50 and Counting tour featured a special guest on most nights. Jones found out who the guest was the day rehearsals. "At Soundcheck was when I found out," he said. "You'd look around and Tom Waits would be standing there and its like 'oh I guess he's on with us'. They may have known but that's when I found out, pretty much at Soundcheck".
A favourite was blues guitarist Gary Clark Jr who played on a few of the 50 and Counting shows. "Great man, really, really great," was how Jones describes Clark. "I love how he plays the blues but there is a fresh energy to it. He is something special. I am really looking forward to hearing more from him".
Darryl Jones is the bass player for The Dead Daisies for the UK tour starting Wednesday in Camden UK.
