The Shins air new tracks in New York

The Shins gave fans a taste of their forthcoming third album in New York last night.

The quartet played an outdoor show at McCarren Pool, Brooklyn and made their way through a 20-song set list in a little over an hour.

In order to play the show, the band had to take a short break from mixing their third album 'Wincing the Night Away', which is due for release early next year. "We're trying to make it good for you", keyboardist Marty Crandall told the crowd. He then went on to say they were aiming for a January 2007 release.

Opening with 'Kissing The Lipless', the set included a selection of tracks from their 2001 debut LP 'Oh, Inverted World' and the 2003 follow-up 'Chutes Too Narrow', including 'Saint Simon', 'Know Your Onion!' and 'Gone For Good'. They also previewed two new tracks entitled 'Australia' and 'Phantom'.

The biggest cheer of the evening was for 'New Slang', which came to a short pause when singer James Mercer forgot the words, telling the audience: "That's what happens when you do something five million times."

After a second attempt also went awry, the band abandoned the song, returning later to play it as an encore, followed by 'Caring Is Creepy'.

The Shins recently canceled appearances at The Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds festivals due to recording commitments.
