The Strokes shook off the rust of an extended hiatus with 2011's Angles, and it appears they have no intention of slowing down any time soon.
Because on Friday (January 25) afternoon — sadly, not at 12:51 — they posted a brand-new song, "One Way Trigger" on their official site. The track not only showcases frontman Julian Casablanca's falsetto (who knew?!?) and peppy guitars, but shiny, downright saccharine synths, too ... and yes, please allow us to be the 1 millionth website to point out that it sounds an awful lot like A-ha's "Take On Me."
One can assume "Trigger" is taken off the Strokes' new album, which the band reportedly began working on in earnest one month after Angles was released, though since that news broke, updates have been scarce. In June 2011, bassist Nikolai Fraiture told Rolling Stone that the Strokes were "trying not to lose momentum by taking time off and having to reboot the whole system," and added "Hopefully, we keep that up.
"We're bringing in parts and ideas," Fraiture said, "and kind of just working on those and trying to make sense of them, coming from five different people."
Of course, guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. was quick to point out that there was no firm timetable for completing the album, saying "Let's get songs first and then think about recording."
There's still no release date — or title — for the new Strokes album, though several outlets have reported it's due later this year. Seattle radio station 107.7 The End also recently revealed they'd heard a handful of songs from the album, including the presumed first single, "All The Time." A spokesperson for the band's label, RCA, did not respond to MTV News' request for comment on the matter by press time.
