The Ting Tings visit Fopp to celebrate the release of their new album 'Super Critical'.
Multi million selling, award winning Salford formed duo The Ting Tings visit Fopp Manchester to perform live and sign copies of their new album 'Super Critical'.
The Ting Tings release their eagerly anticipated third full-length album 'Super Critical' on 27th October. 'Super Critical' includes the single 'Wrong Club' and current track 'Do It Again'.
Recorded in Ibiza, the album was co-produced by Duran Duran's Andy Taylor who used analogue recording techniques learnt from his band's time in the studio to capture The Ting Tings' sound. Nostalgia for a time before dance became synonymous with a corporate attitude heavily informed the duo's songwriting. Katie and Jules were inspired in equal parts by the island's constant party atmosphere and the glamorous excess of 1970s New York.
An iconic image of Diana Ross emerging from behind a curtain into a DJ booth was an especially strong influence. Katie explains how 'everything about her, the dress, the hair, the make-up, made her look like the most exotic and effortless creation... she was so glamorous, so of a moment, so not overdone. If we could get a sound even 5% close to what that picture was giving us, we knew we were onto something."
Formed in 2007, The Ting Tings met at Islington Mill Studios where Jules produced tracks for various artists performing at the venue and Katie worked at the bar. A Chinese colleague of Katie's was called Ting Ting, and she explained that her name sounded like the pronunciation of "bandstand" in Mandarin. Following subsequent research the duo discovered that it also meant "sound of innovation on an open mind", which seemed a perfect fit for their music.
'Super Critical' follows 2008's million selling We Started Nothing and 2012's Sounds From Nowhereville. The Ting Tings are currently touring internationally with a UK tour this November that includes a sell-out show at Manchester's Deaf Institute.
