The Zimmers enter charts

The Zimmers, a band of old people with a combined age of over 3,000 years, has entered the UK's official top 40 singles chart.

Their edgy debut release, a cover of The Who's My Generation, claimed a worthy 26th spot.

Lead vocals were sung by Alf Carretta, 90, a relative youth compared to 100-year-old band mate Buster Martin, the bearded gent seen sticking his middle finger up rocker style at the end of the video.

The group, named after a walking frame, was formed as part of a BBC documentary on the nation's elderly, examining feelings of isolation and imprisonment brought on by age.

Will Daws, a producer on the Power to the People programme, whose idea it was to form The Zimmers, said: "Considering we weren't on any play-lists, because we were not being young and trendy enough, I think this is an absolute triumph.

"Now we're in the charts DJs will have to play us and hopefully then we can break into the top 10."

Mick Hucknall's Simply Red also entered the chart this week with new release Stay. But sadly for Mick, he could only manage 36th spot - a full 10 places below rival artists The Zimmers.

Meanwhile at the top of the singles chart, Rihanna's single Umbrella stayed at number one.

Climbing seven places to this week's two was Real Girl by Mutya Buena. Sticking at three was Beautiful Liar, Beyonce and Shakira's collaboration, while Hellogoodbye's Here (In Your Arms) was another non-mover at four.

Dropping three places to five was Makes Me Wonder by Maroon 5 and sliding one to six were the Gym Class Heroes with Cupid's Chokehold.
