"Star in the Hood" Tinchy Stryder, currently at 7 in the UK charts and rising with his single 'Bright Lights' feat Pixie Lott, has been announced for the inaugural Kaya Festival, held in North Wales 1st - 3rd June. The British artist of Ghanaian origin plays on Afrikaya Saturday joining a bill which includes Tony Allen, Dele Sosimi, Kanda Bongo Man and Sona Jobarteh.
Despite a tough upbringing he has a distinctly positive outlook on life and is determined to provide a positive role model for kids across the country. His success with music, clothing label Star In The Hood and other business ventures was all accomplished while completing his degree at University of East London. Therefore he was the obvious choice to head up Kaya's Do Youth Day initiative, which offers local teenagers a morning of training and mentoring followed by Tinchy's performance.
The announcement also sees a host of local and underground acts join the bill, including Drymbago, Ysgol Glanaethy (who competed on BBC 1's Last Choir Standing), Banda Bacana, Latin Groove Collective, Tacsi, Sundance, EFA Supertramp, Sam Parsons, Two Man Ting, 25 Past The Skank, Mizizi and Folie Ordinaire.
In addition to the music, Kaya will feature a number of activities, crafts and entertainment to get involved with; including free Tai Chi workshops in the healing fields, workshops in African drumming, Brazilian Caporeira dance and painting, a climbing tower, recycled art installation and a solar cinema.
