Trent Reznor has hit out at the state of rock, blaming 'cowardly' bands for turning the genre 'stale'.
In conversation with the Daily Record, the Nine Nich Nails front man claims rock music has become "stale". He then pointed the finger at the way bands attempt to model themselves in order to get good reviews from cool publications and also stated that there is clearly a problem when there is more excitement surrounding dance music.
"When you see a lot more excitement generated from the dance tent, I do think a staleness has permeated [rock music]," Reznor said. "A pretty conservative nature has crept into music, and I don't mean sonically."
"I get the sense that a lot of bands today are designing themselves to get a good review in the hip blogs," he continued. "That is probably the safest and most cowardly thing you can do as an artist. If you have something to say, then say it. Express yourself and break the rules."
