Vampire Weekend definitely got into the Halloween spirit during their Wednesday night performance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," sporting spooky skeleton makeup (though we think Rostam was supposed to be that "I Like Turtles" kid) and giving their fans a very special treat: a brand-new song.
It's called "Unbelievers," and it's definitely better than a Fun Size Snickers. With its bright piano/keyboard chords, rushing drums, strummed acoustic guitar and horns, it not only showcases the band's continuing growth, but perhaps gives us a hint of where they're headed on the follow-up to 2010's Contra. And though frontman Ezra Koenig's lyrics — the chorus goes "Girl, you and I will die unbelievers/Bound to the tracks of the train" — don't exactly conjure up visions of Halloween, well, the band made up for it by requiring their horn section to dress like the undead. We admire their commitment. Also, the song is really great.
There's been little news from the Vampire Weekend camp in recent months, as they've been working on their new album (they played a pair of club shows this summer, ahead of their headlining set at the Pitchfork Music Festival), though that appears to be changing. Just last week, Koenig spoke with VW fansite Team Vampire Weekend and revealed that the band is coming close to finishing things up.
"I really can't wait to begin the process of sharing the next album," he wrote. "We've been working like maniacs for a long time. The time is not so far away, we promise."
Give a listen to the new song, and tell us what you think in the comments!
