The 38-year-old singer-and-actress will only wear outfits she feels secure and confident in and studies texture rather than appearance when selecting the garments she wants to wear.
She said: "I love to be comforted by clothes. Obviously you want to look in the mirror and like what you see but I need to love what I feel. I need to feel comfortable in terms of sensation."
Vanessa ' who has children Lily-Rose, 12, and nine-year-old Jack with long-term partner Johnny Depp ' admitted she struggles to throw away any of her clothes, even when they start to suffer damage.
She said: "I keep everything. It's not a good thing because you drown under your closet, but some things are really important to me, especially the stage clothes."
Among Vanessa's favourite stage outfits is a vintage velvet dress ' even though she admits it is not very practical for performing.
She explained to Britain's Vogue magazine: "The dress is from the 20s. And it's not good to perform in because it's so fragile. I've almost ripped it so many times.
"It smells vintage, so you can't wash it the way you would want.
"But it has the best appearance. The way it catches the light, the way it moves."
