Play N Skillz Biography
Play-N-Skillz have been noted as the new faces and sounds of Hip Hop and Pop music. Play-26 and Skillz-24 have only been making beats since the turn of the century but their talent has brought them up in the ranks, rapidly. Starting out as DJ’s in the nightclub scene of Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX, these brothers were not liking the sounds they were hearing in music. Living on their “grind” together in south Irving, TX, DJ Play and DJ Skillz bought their first beat machine and started making their own music and recording with a simple microphone in the bathroom of their 2 bedroom apartment. With their DJing skills, the two quickly got recognized by local radio station personalities and major label record reps. This grew to help them as they quickly started flooding the streets with mix-tapes of then, current hits, along with their freestyle and beat making ability slipped in between hit records at the time. The buzz was created and the birth of Play-N-Skillz and Prime Time Muzik Produxxtionz was born. With the help of friends and business partners who saw the talent and heard the first single this duo were going to drop, “Freaks”, Play-N-Skillz were able to build a studio in Irving, TX and broaden their horizons. Receiving endorsements by artists like Petey Pablo, DJ DMD, Lil Jon and The Eastside Boyz, Adina Howard, and many more, the brothers quickly started getting approached by major label artists. In a visit to Dallas, Lil Flip was introduced to Play-N-Skillz and was looking for young hip producers to work on his project. After hearing the talent, Lil Flip moved to Dallas for 6 months to record his album, U GOTTA FEEL ME, with the producers. Play-N-Skillz quickly scored 12 tracks on this multi-platinum album and received a publishing deal with EMI Publishing. Play-N-Skillz then decided to focus on their talent in rapping and focused on their album. After receiving a beat CD at a concert in Dallas, the world renoun group, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, wanted to take Play-N-Skillz to their next show in Tulsa, OK and hear more tracks. Krayzie Bone listened to “Freaks” and immediately wanted to jump on the song and work with Play-N-Skillz. The group developed a lifelong relationship with Play-N-Skillz and Krayzie Bone came back to Dallas to record on the single. Quickly released to radio, “Freaks” started making huge noise on request lines across the nation and turned the heads of Major Label Presidents and the leader of Latin airplay across the nation, Charles Chavez. Independently the single received over 3000 spins per week and Chavez then signed Play-N-Skillz under a management deal. The offers started growing and the single was blowing up faster than expected so Chavez decided to take them to Universal Records where they were quickly signed. Play-N-Skillz dropped their debut album The Process on Universal Records in 2004, with features from big names like Three 6 Mafia, Akon, Lil Flip, Static, Krayzie Bone, Adina Howard, Layzie Bone, Frankie J., and Chamillionaire. The duo quickly established a fan base amongst Latino’s with their hit “Latino’s Stand Up.” Being the first big Latin artists from the south with the ability to rap and produce, the Latino community quickly embraced and supported everything Play-N-Skillz touched. Their music videos for “Freaks/Call Me” and “Latino’s Stand Up” quickly got the recognition of MTV and BET. This caused them to be widely respected by all races, but this was just the start of things. With the success that followed their name, Play-N-Skillz quickly became sought after producers. In 2005, Chamillionaire got his deal over at Universal Records and quickly called Play-N-Skillz for a hit. Play-N-Skillz quickly thought of an idea and called Krayzie Bone and asked him to fly to Houston, TX to record with them and Chamillionaire. With the beat and the concept already drafted by Play-N-Skillz, the four got in the studio and created the song that will break records in the music charts, “Ridin (Dirty)”. Play-N-Skillz still tell fans to this day that they never thought that the song would be this big but big isn’t even the word for it! Never heard of before in the music industry, “Ridin (Dirty)” sold 3 million ring tones, as well as topped the Billboard Hot 100 Charts for 6 weeks strait, gone multi-platinum in 6 different countries, and won an MTV VMA and BET Music Award. This has currently launched Play-N-Skillz as “A-List Super-Producers”. Back-dooring this success, Play-N-Skillz released their single, “Get Freaky”, to their next album The Titaniq, which has gone Top 40 Mainstream across the nation and made Play-N-Skillz a nationally recognized overall success.
