2 Chainz found himself in trouble with airport security while trying to catch an outbound flight from New York two weeks ago, and after his brush with the law, the Atlanta rapper is being more careful than ever.
2 Chainz was arrested at LaGuardia Airport on May 22 while trying to make his way to North Carolina to rejoin Drake on the Club Paradise Tour. But a four-finger gold ring in his carry-on bag was flagged by security, who considered the ring to be brass knuckles and took 2 Chainz into custody. He was charged with misdemeanor possession of a weapon in the fourth degree. But don't bet on this ever happening again.
"No more rings. [I'm] super-light on the rings," 2 Chainz told backstage at Hot 97's Summer Jam concert over the weekend. "I learn from all my mistakes. I don't think I made a mistake, but who wants to go through that type of stuff again? Me just coming back through the same airport again was kind of traumatic. It's a hurdle that we jumped over. Now we moving on."
After 2 Chainz's arrest, several members of the hip-hop community took to Twitter to defend him, explaining that he'd sported the harmless ring at a photo shoot just days earlier.
"They tried to assassinate my character, they tried to assassinate my swag," the "Spend It" rapper explained in an interview immediately following his release. "It was just a negative dilemma earlier where someone misconstrued a piece of jewelry for a weapon and stuff."
2 Chainz hit the stage at the annual Summer Jam concert in New Jersey on Sunday, joining Big Sean and Young Jeezy during their sets to perform "Mercy" and "SupaFreak." His debut album, Based on a T.R.U. Story, is set to drop on August 14, led by the single "No Lie," featuring Drake.
