The person who came up with the idea to sell Lady Gaga's Born This Way for 99 cents is going to get promoted (if the strategy works) or fired (if the strategy flops.)
The retailer, for the second time this week, is selling the album for 99 cents. It costs them over $8 per unit sold at that price and it's loss leading, meaning they take the loss on selling a CD that cheaply and make up the difference via bigger ticket items. Amazon stands to lose nearly $3 million from this strategy.
