Carrie Underwood: Songs should be dark

Carrie Underwood admits it would be "boring" if she only sang about her "wonderful" life.

The country singer is currently promoting her new album Blown Away. Carrie shot to fame after winning American Idol in 2005 and has since gone on to enjoy global success.

The 29-year-old star is also happily married to hockey star Mike Fisher.

Although Carrie is content with her life, she understands that she can't always release upbeat songs and needs to draw on other, darker emotions.

"There are some definite sweeter songs on the album, but I think the ones that are most impactful are the ones that are... the more dramatic songs. It's fun to play a character. It's fun to not be me all the time," she told ET. "I am in a wonderful relationship. I have a great home life... If I had 14 tracks on the album talking about how wonderful my life is... it's boring."

Carrie and Mike both have demanding work schedules, and this can take its toll on their relationship.

Although they sometimes have to spend periods of time apart, the singer has revealed it is made easier by the fact that they are both so understanding and laidback.

"Neither one of us have a clingy personality. [We] love each other very much and make the most of all the time that we actually do get to spend together," she added. "But we're both really independent."

Carrie's fourth studio album, Blown Away, is released in the US today.
