The actress became overwhelmed with emotion when doctors gave them the positive news and broke down in tears of relief. Her husband Michael had been receiving intense radiation and chemotherapy for stage four cancer after a walnut sized tumour was discovered in his throat last year.
The 66-year-old star now believes he has “beaten” the disease and the couple couldn’t be happier, even if Michael is still coming to terms with the news.
"She had a good cry when she heard," Michael told People. "I can't tell you I was jumping up and clicking my heels. For me, it will probably be two or three months before it will really sink in and feel good."
Catherine has praised the medical attention Michael received throughout his treatment and is looking forward to a healthy and happy 2011. The 41-year-old star feels a weight has been lifted off her shoulders in the past few weeks.
"We are so grateful for the wonderful care Michael has received and of course for this happy news,” she told the publication. “It's an incredible way to start the New Year."
Michael and Catherine celebrated by taking their two children – ten-year-old Dylan and Carys, seven – out for a special meal. They went to a restaurant in Manhattan on January 6 and toasted Michael’s clean bill of health. "We dined on oysters and toasted with Shirley Temples," he revealed, before adding he also ordered a glass of wine but it “didn’t taste good”.
Michael now plans to follow an organic eating regime packed with plenty of fruit and vegetables as he fears stress and diet could have affected his health.
Despite losing around 32lbs. while battling cancer, the actor – who caused concern with his frail appearance – says his appetite has flourished in recent weeks. He has gained 12lbs so far and has joked he is “eating like a pig”.
