Charli XCX: I have word vomit

Charli XCX's song writing process is a "total mess".

The 22-year-old star has impressed the world with her catchy lyrics in hit tracks such as Boom Clap and Doing It featuring Rita Ora.

Although she seems to have a way with words, Charli isn't always organised about putting them on paper.

"It's a total mess. I am very spontaneous when I write; it kind of just comes out. I never think about what I'm going to write about first... it just sort of comes out like word vomit. Actually, my songwriting process is very selfish - I don't ever think about my audience. I just think about myself," she grinned to marieclaire.com.

She describes her sound as "wild pop music" and rather than simply making music, Charli sees it through sound-to-colour synaesthesia which helps inspire music video ideas.

The moment she realised she'd made the big time was the instant the brunette beauty stopped worrying about everything and instead enjoyed the perks of her celebrity lifestyle.

And it seems fame has boosted her confidence too as she's finally found her place in the world of music with her second record, Sucker.

"[My first album] True Romance was definitely, in part, still me finding my voice as a writer. I was nervous, and I was a lot more shy. The album sounds bruised. I feel like, in some ways, I was trying to be someone I wasn't," she recalled. "Sucker is 100 per cent me, and I've said things on the record that I would have been too afraid to say before. It's real, raw, and loud."

Being successful means plenty of touring and playing sell-out shows. It has its pitfalls though as she remembers one of the craziest things to happen on the road was someone throwing a gun under her bus in Toronto.
