The singer is said to have been so angered by the questions on Good Morning America that when he finished a scheduled performance, he stormed off stage.
Celebrity website TMZ.com reports that Brown 'exploded in rage'.
He is said to have begun to scream, before smashing a window in his dressing room.
Security were called but Brown rushed out of the ABC network show's studios in New York's Times Square after ripping his shirt off, less than an hour after he appeared on air.
On the TV show he had dismissed his assault on ex-girlfriend Rihanna, insisting: 'It's not really a big deal.'
The R&B star, who battered the Umbrella singer two years ago, seemed annoyed when a US television host tried to ask him about the incident.
He said: 'It's not really a big deal to me now. I think I'm past that in my life and today's the album day.'
As he tried to promote his new album F.A.M.E, he added: 'I've been focusing on this album. This album is what I wanted to talk about, not stuff that happened two years ago.'
A representative for Good Morning America was unavailable for comment.
