COLDPLAY have denied allegations that they copied part of another artist's song for their single Viva La Vida.
Guitarist Joe Satriani is claiming that the song was based on parts of his 2004 instrumental If I Could Fly.
But Coldplay told a US federal court that any similarities between the songs were not enough to warrant damages.
They also said that Satriani's work "lacks originality" and should not receive copyright protection.
Satriani's representatives had said that they would "dog" the band at the Grammy Awards earlier this year in order to serve the band with legal papers over the dispute.
His lawyer Howard E. King said that he thought the issue could have been resolved without a lawsuit and that Coldplay's response was typical in such cases.
