Chris Martin says Coldplay's new record is 'dangerously close' to a musical.
The band are currently promoting their concept album Mylo Xyloto. The British rockers are keen to continue reinventing their sound and frontman Chris says the new tracks have a theme.
Coldplay collaborated with Rihanna on Princess of China and Chris has explained why the group needed to secure a female vocalist for the song.
"Well, our new record is sort of a story; it's not quite a musical, but it's dangerously close. There's a bit of a love-story thread, so we really needed someone to sing even higher than me," Chris told MTV News. "[It's] hard, but very possible. You need to be a female really. For all [drummer] Will [Champion]'s good intentions, he [can't do it]...'
Chris went on to reveal he wrote Princess of China with Rihanna in mind.
He was keen to work with the R&B star, but wasn't sure if she would be interested. Chris was thrilled when she accepted and believes the track has pushed their musical boundaries even further.
"... So, in like a dream scenario, we had a song that I'd secretly kind of written to see if Rihanna would want to sing it," Martin continued. "We came up with the idea of asking her to sing it with us, and, to our great surprise, she said OK.
't seems like you can try and sound any way you like nowadays. You don't have to be in a rock box or a hip-hop box or a pop box, and I think it's fun when you embrace that idea."
Mylo Xyloto will be released next month.
