Coldplay topped the UK and US singles chart for the first time yesterday (22.06.08).
The British rockers saw their track 'Viva La Vida' go straight in at number one on both sides of the Atlantic, while their fourth LP 'Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends' retained the top spot in the UK album chart.
The feat was achieved purely on download sales in both the US and UK as no hard copies are yet on sale. The band's drummer Will Champion said: "We are thrilled to have our first number one single in the UK.
"And to be number one on both sides of the Atlantic makes it all the more special. Fingers crossed for the quadruple."
Following on from their single success, the band's latest album is expected to be number one on the Billboard Hot 200 chart this week.
Coldplay, fronted by Chris Martin, are the first British band to top the US singles charts since the Spice Girls in 1997, who made number one with their track 'Wannabe'.
