Coldplay top MTV Europe Awards

Coldplay topped a night of British triumphs at the MTV Europe Awards in Lisbon.

They won the awards for Best Song with Speed of Sound, and were also named Best UK and Ireland Act.

Other British winners included Robbie Williams, Gorillaz, James Blunt and the Chemical Brothers.

The strong British showing marked a turnround from last year's awards, when Britain claimed only one prize.

Robbie Williams won the Best Male Award for the third time. Williams' album Intensive Care topped the charts in 16 countries last week.

Gorillaz beat Green Day, Coldplay and U2 to the Best Group Award.

James Blunt was voted Best New Act. His song, You're Beautiful, has been a big success in Europe during the past year.

The American punk trio Green Day won two awards, and the Chemical Brothers took the best video award.

Coldplay and Williams performed live, and Madonna opened the show, emerging from a glitter ball to sing her new single, Hung Up.
