Daft Punk: 'Why we dropped synths for strings for 'TRON' soundtrack'

Daft Punk have talked about why they swapped synths for a 90-piece orchestra for their TRON: Legacy soundtrack.

The duo said the complexity of the project, which has resulted in their first album of new material since 2005's 'Human After All', forced them to move out of their comfort zone.

"Synths are a very low level of artificial intelligence, whereas you have a Stradivarius [violin] that will live for a thousand years," Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo told Factmag.com. "We knew from the start that there was no way we were going to do this film score with two synthesizers and a drum machine."

Bandmate Thomas Bangalter added: "This project is by far the most challenging and complex thing we have ever been involved with.

"Coming from our background of making electronic music in a small bedroom, then ending up having our music performed by a 90-piece orchestra - we are lucky to have had the opportunity to experience some powerful moments artistically over the years, but recording this orchestra was a very intense experience."

The album, the band's first full movie score, will be released on December 6. The film opens in the UK on December 17.
