Demi Lovato: Thank you for support

Demi Lovato has thanked her friends and family for their support in the wake of her father's death.

The 20-year-old star's biological father, Patrick Lovato, is believed to have passed away recently after a battle with cancer.

Demi's sister Dallas shared news of the tragedy Saturday via Twitter.

"Rest in peace daddy I love you," she wrote.

Demi remained silent on the micro-blog and subsequently missed a photoshoot for the X Factor US.

On Sunday she logged back onto the site. Demi appeared overwhelmed by well-wishers.

"I feel so humbled to have had so much support from my fans, friends, family and complete strangers," she wrote, adding, "God bless you all, thank you so much."

She did not directly address reports of the tragedy.

Demi is known to be estranged from her biological father.

She wrote For the Love of a Daughter from her album Unbroken about her time growing up without him.

"How could you push me out of your world/Lie to your flesh and your blood?" she sings in the 2011 track.

"It's a very personal song," Demi later The Daily Mail.

"I wrote it when I was 16 and getting it out is like therapy," she said.

Patrick reached out to Demi in the press that same year.

"I love her so much, and I just want her to call me. This is the only way I can talk to her, I try to reach her but it never works," he told RadarOnline.

Demi subsequently shunned ideas of a reconciliation. She accused her father of falsely making himself look like the good guy.

'We are still [estranged]. It's not exactly how he made it out to be," she said in a statement.

"I had to cut off all connection. It was hurting me too much."

It remains unclear if they ever reconciled.

The exact cause of the country singer's death remains unknown.
