DJ Yoda & The Heritage Orchestra at Scala

Incomparable turntable trickster DJ Yoda and vagabond ensemble The Heritage Orchestra are joining forces on Thursday 26th July for the premiere performance of Gabriel Prokofiev's pioneering new work Concerto for Turntables & Orchestra which is brought to you as part of Audi's ever innovative Remastered project.

Composer Gabriel Prokofiev explains: "From Edgard Varese's experiments with reel-to-reel and 'organised sound', to the proto-sampling of Musique Concrete, led by Pierre Schaeffer in the 1950s, classical composers have a rich history of manipulating recorded sounds, that stretches back long before Kool Herc or Grandmaster Flash scratched their first records."

The quest for musical expressiveness in electronica has led to the instrument that first came to life at the legendary Bronx Block Parties of the '70s taking centre stage at the pinnacle of classical performance, a concerto. Gabriel has created sounds for the DJ, taking samples from orchestral instruments to keep the overall sound organic and integrated. The score gives DJ Yoda rhythmic and pitch guidelines but much of his part is improvised, harking back to the very earliest type of concerto where a lot of scope was left for improvisation.

Not only will this concert twist the rules of the classical and hip-hop traditions, but it will also feature a very special guest appearance from Warp Records' lauded glitch wizards Plaid.

Leading on from previous orchestral projects, Plaid have been invited along with fiery percussion pair, O Duo, to combine their talents with The Heritage Orchestra for a unique opportunity to create new and exciting music. Alongside the one-off classical-inspired set by DJ Yoda and visuals by SeaBuzzard this promises to be an exceptional evening.

Helping to produce this unique event are Audi. As part of the TT Remastered campaign, Audi have worked closely with a select group of cutting edge artists like Amp Fiddler, The Motorettes and Xpress 2, reinterpreting and 'remastering' iconic music tracks. Teaming up with Gabriel Prokofiev, DJ Yoda and The Heritage Orchestra for this exclusive performance is an exciting addition to the remastered theme, taking the concept even further by remastering the musical process.
