Drake and Justin Timberlake share an appreciation for Memphis, JT's birthplace and Drizzy's home during summers as a child. And something else bonds the music superstars: humor.
Drake said he got to know Timberlake, whom he's hoping to collaborate with on his sophomore album, through laughs.
"There's just people that you meet along the way that are great individuals," Drake told. "Just really open for conversations and jokes, and Justin is one of those guys. We built a rapport because I wasn't walking in trying to be an overly cool rapper, and he wasn't like, 'I'm JT the heartthrob.' It was two guys, and we were talking. We started kicking jokes, and that was it. Every time I see him, it's a bunch of laughs."
Timberlake recently covered Drake's "Over" in concert and gave the Toronto lyricist an enthusiastic introduction at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. When Drake was working on his debut, Thank Me Later, he tried to recruit JT for a track. The two weren't able to connect professionally but have maintained a strong friendship since.
Drake said JT also imparts very useful knowledge, just like mentor Lil Wayne.
"[Justin] always has great things to say, amidst the funny moments," he explained. "The best thing about Justin, he reinforces the fact, like, 'You're doing the right thing. The way you are now, just be that guy.' Much like what Wayne tells me. 'What you're doing is working. Don't change anything. Be approachable, be humble, be nice. It goes a long way.' "
