Given the success of her hit "Lights" — and the fact that she's currently dating EDM superstar Skrillex — Ellie Goulding has found doing press here in the U.S. to be a rather, well, odd experience. No matter how much she wants to discuss her brand-new Halcyon album, the press can't stop asking about her personal life — which, come to think of it, is just part of being a celeb here in the States.
"I feel like everyone's really fascinated by my love life for some reason. I think it's because I write so explicitly about stuff. It's just how I've always been, really, with lyrics and being really honest," Goulding sighed. "I get girls writing to me saying I've really helped them through stuff, and it makes me feel incredible. You know, serious, heavy stuff. And that, to me, I feel is one of my biggest achievements. So maybe that's the source of why people are so interested in who I am, in fact, with, or dating, whatever."
So while she's trying to steer the conversation away from her love life, even Goulding will admit that tact is proving more difficult than she'd imagined — especially since a large portion of Halcyon was inspired by her relationships, both past (she previously dated BBC Radio 1 DJ Greg James) and, of course, present.
"It was definitely inspired by things that happened in my personal life last year that I find hard to explain," she said. "That's why it's so hard for me to do an interview and be like, 'I don't want to talk about it,' because it relates so much to what I do, but yeah, it's kind of about mix of different things."
So she'll dutifully answer a few questions here or there about her personal life; it's just part of the job. But what she most certainly won't talk about any more is her hair, which, similarities to Skrillex's 'do aside, she thinks is a ridiculous talking point. Then again, it's probably also one she won't have to discuss anytime soon.
"Oh, the hair. Well, I've cut it all off!" she laughed, removing a knit cap to reveal her new, shorter locks. "You're seeing it first. So let's not talk about it again!"
