The actor, who celebrates his 16th wedding anniversary to wife Eve Mavrakis on July 22, said that he started drinking heavily after finding global fame as the star of Trainspotting in 1996 but eventually decided to tackle his demons head-on.
“Drinking is a very self-centred way of being,” he told The Mirror.
“I was successful and felt invincible – drinking and just living the life. I had a problem, which is why I stopped and I haven’t had a drink in more than ten years now.”
Now the Scottish star concentrates on his career and life in Los Angeles with his wife and their four daughters, Clara Mathilde, 15, Esther Rose, nine, adopted Mongolian Jamiyan, also nine, and an unnamed seven-month-old baby.
But he added that a move back to the UK could be on the cards at some point.
“We’ve lived in America for a wee while,” he explained, “But we’ll be back, I’m sure. I think it’s just a temporary thing.”
