Gary Glitter may have survived being in a Vietnamese prison but it appears he may be spending the rest of his life in one in his homeland of Britain.
Glitter was found guilty on Thursday of one count of attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault and one count of having sex with a girl under the age of 13. All of the charges dated back to incidence with three young girls in the late-70's.
The singer will return to court on February 27 for sentencing which can include life in prison for just the sex with a minor charge. It does not seem there would be any leniency when he has already served 2-1/2 of a three year sentence in Vietnam for obscene acts with two girls, aged 10 and 11. He had previously been deported from Cambodia to Vietnam after being accused of sexual abuse. He also was previously convicted of possessing child pornography in the late 90's in Britain.
Detective Chief Inspector Michael Orchard said of Glitter "Paul Gadd has shown himself to be a habitual sexual predator who took advantage of the star status afforded to him by targeting young girls who trusted him and were in awe of his fame. His lack of remorse and defense that the victims were lying makes his crimes all the more indefensible."
While Glitter had only one hit in the U.S., Rock and Roll (Part 1) (1972 / #7 U.S. / #2 U.K.), he had eleven top ten hits in Britain between 1972 and 1975 including the number one's I'm the Leader of the Gang (I Am), I Love You Love Me Love, and Always Yours.
