The best hip hop group from a small town in South Wales are back with a fresh slamming new album entitled KINGS OF CAERLEON.
Newport's Goldie Lookin Chain are taking the party back to their roots with their new album which is released on September 2nd on Golddust Gramphonics / 1983 records. Once again GLC skilfully combine beats, rhymes and swearing to create the ultimate collection of rap essentials to play loud in your car, on your boom box or just to annoy your mum.
Let us take you on a track by track tour……
1 IT'S THE CHAIN
The Chain are back with a slammer to open the album telling you: "It's the Chain". An up tempo blast of beats with the GLC reintroducing themselves to the listener. The track features every member of the crew and has an extended scratch break at the end. Eggsy said, "It's like blowing up a tower block then building a spark new one with working lifts that don't smell of piss, it's wicked"
2 GANGSTA
Some things in life define you, make you what you are and "Gangsta" sees the GLC giving the reasons that they are Gangsta. It's not all about violence and hanging your old shoes off a telephone wire - it's about helping your mum put the bins out and helping old ladies across the road. Adam Hussain said, "I'm a true 21st century bad boy gangsta, even when I'm watching that TV show with Pip Schofield where people do weird stuff to themselves in a box with my Mum and Dad on Saturday night"
3 AT THE DRIVE-THRU
The saviour of the modern world - the 24 hour drive-thru. Breakfast, lunch and dinner all in the comfort of your own car - who cares if it's horse meat? Not the GLC. Mike Balls grew up eating burgers from Wimpy to Burger King to that van down by the transporter bridge run by the woman with all them tattoos and the weeping sores on her face. Mike is fighting fit, although he did end up having an operation and having half his insides taken out and nearly died. At The Drive-thru is a banging tune with a country and western feel from the good ole Newport boys all topped off with pedal steel guitar. Rhys from GLC said, "We were inspired by a number of classic albums, Becks "Odelay" being one of them and if you have 3 pints of cider and some Jager bombs you can here that influence on "At The Drive-thru".
4 YOU DON'T KNOW
If like most people you haven't got a clue then fear not, the GLC have written a song for you. You will be none the wiser but you will have heard a banging tune. Paying homage to Beastie Boys "Check Your Head" and featuring Adam Hussain's lyrics scratched by Dj Killer Tomato. This is a hip hop song with a live feel. Billy Webb said' "We wanted to do something different but we did this instead".
5 BANESWELL EXPRESS
Everybody loves shopping and where better to do it than in Newport's finest and best stocked shop. This track pays its respects to Biz Markie's "Albee Square Mall" and has an old skool hip hop feel.
6 NEWPORT BOUNCERS
Newport bouncers are so safe they made a film about them so here's a song too. What more do you need to know? We have all been sick on the dance floor and been ejected from a night club haven't we? Adam Hussain said, "I use to go to town and pretend to be a bouncer to chat up girls, it worked a treat and I kissed 3 girls one year it was great". The music sound a bit like the Bee Gees and there is lots of swearing!
7 BECAUSE I'M
This sees some of the GLC's alter egos coming to the forefront. Over hard drums and trumpet stabs the boys rap from their other personalities such as, Stay At Home Ken, Anctious B and Toilet Time Terry. It's short but sweet and it will make you want to explore your hidden rap alter ego.
8 LIVIN' AT HOME
Being nearly 40 and still living with you mum is not as bad as it seems unless you are trying to record raps and your mum comes in to put the hoover round. A good rolling brake keeps this tune sounding as fresh as newly washed bedding just put on by your mum. Rhys from GLC said "I love this tune, it's funny coz it's true. There is nothing like getting all your clothes washed except when you mum tries to iron you best track suit and melts the nylon".
9 WORKAHOLIC
If you are doing a job you love then you are doing alright and the GLC have given up work to concentrate on smoking the weed and are taking it very seriously. A big bass line and some nice trumpets on track will have you thinking of telling your boss where to stick his job and soon you too will be bonging it like a pro in your new found vocation. Mike Balls said' "I have only had one job at Mega Bowl, it's shut now so I have to find a new job and I'm giving it my all, I might even give myself a promotion tonight if I can smoke 3 spliffs in under half an hour".
10 TAKIN' OUT THE BINS
This is dedicated to the Beastie Boys. The only instrumental on the album with live instruments and everything. You will want to turn this one up!
11 JUST COZ IT RHYMES
Another track which nods to the Beastie Boys love of making up raps just coz they rhyme. Most rap music makes no sense at all so the GLC thought they would have a go at making up a rap just coz it rhymes. The beat is a pure 70s jam which makes you want to take off your pants and set them on fire on the dance floor. Graham T Bear said, "I love this song coz I rap about having sex with fish, how many other rap songs do that? Very few I can tell you, probably about 6 or 7, so there".
12 WHAT WOULD BIGGIE DO
The only way to live you life is by one simple rule. What would biggie do if he was faced with the same situation? This is the serious song where the listener is given a new pathway to solve problems and rid themselves of inner turmoil. All they need is a poster of Biggie, an Ouija board and a can of Strongbow. Mystical said' "I ask myself every day about a thousand times, what would Biggie do? It turns out he would have 11 pints and a curry every night for a week then go to hospital".
