Last night on Beats 1 Zane continued his week of Suicide Squad premieres by dropping Grimes, 'Medieval Warfare' as his World Record and his World First came from Hunny, 'Colder Parts'. Zane also spoke with Grimes with the key quotes below.
We're in Berlin. We just came from Latvia and Lithuania so we're tripping out in some weird parts in the world.
On her Suicide Squad track "Medieval Warefare":
It was an old demo and then I just tailored it lyrically and sonically a bit more to what I thought they would want for the movie during one of my weeks off.
On being inspired by the movie:
To be fair before they even hit me up about the song I had watched the trailer at least twenty or thirty times. It's Harley Quinn and the Joker its a pretty iconic character it's not like a movie where you don't know anything about it. The comic books of today are contemporary Canon, it's the modern Homer - there's a lot to work with.
The people who work with kid's movies they probably just drop acid and do the weirdest s**t possible. And they get paid for it. [As musicians] I feel like we still have limits of like song structure and stuff whereas if you watch SpongeBob Squarepants or whatever it's literally just insane.
On whether she would want to get involved with movie scores:
In theory but also everyone I know who has ever done it brutally hated it and highly recommends against it. So I feel a bit more fearful of it now.
Even in my brief experience working on music videos, when you're doing something where like every second of it is costing like thousands of dollars and involves hundreds to thousands of people, there's no room for improv and chill vibes.
This movie in particular is a movie I'm really, really looking forward to.
On when she got the call to be apart of the soundtrack:
Oh yeah, no, no I was openly weeping. You can ask the other people. I was very, very, very stoked.
On how you know when it's done:
I was actually also openly weeping during that entire process of finishing it. The pressure was pretty extreme. You can't tell how weird they want it - I just kept getting caught up and I was like do you want it more weird or more normal. So I just made the end more weird and I made the beginning more normal.
On what's next:
I'm just finishing up on tour and then I'm gonna start training for the UFC. I would like to spend the next two years training for the UFC. Upon failing that then I will return to music. I'm really serious. I haven't had a beak since before Visions I've been touring and you know I just really wanna go at something else. I have a lot of energy, I love working out. I'm obsessed with the UFC. I just really want to become an elite fighter. I'm actually dead serious about this. I mean I'm not gonna make it into the UFC, obviously.
My stylist and dear friend actually works with a bunch of UFC fighters and stuff. On off time they train like four hours a day. So I know I'm f****d because I would never even train that much time. I just wanna go really, really hard at something totally insane that I've never done before. I know it won't work out but I just wanna do it. I wanna just become super ripped because also then by the time I have to go back to touring I'll just be in shape and I won't have to do the preparing to tour thing.
