Janet Jackson is to be honoured as an African-American role model.

The 38-year-old singer will receive the honour at the New York Hilton from the 100 Black Men, an organisation which seeks to improve the quality of life for African Americans and other minorities.

The honour for Jackson comes 11 months after her "wardrobe malfunction" at the MTV SuperBowl half-time show in Houston when Justin Timberlake ripped off her top during a duet exposing Jackson's right pierced breast.

The incident caused outrage amongst many Americans watching the live broadcast, but Jackson later described it as an accident and denied it was a publicity stunt for her latest album Damita Jo.

100 Black Men president Paul Williams told the New York Daily News, "An individual's worth can't be judged by a single moment in that person's life," adding, "I hope we don't have any surprises!."

Previous Black Men 100 honourees include chat show host Oprah Winfrey and US Secretary of State Colin Powell.
