Jason Derulo doesn't think it's wise to chase other people's creativity.
The American hitmaker has been topping the charts ever since his self-titled debut album dropped in 2010.
Last month he released his first single from new record Everything Is 4, called Want to Want Me and he hopes his music continues to stand out from his peers.
"Find what your true light is. What makes you different? What makes you shine? A lot of people chase a lot of other people's creativity to a fault. You can be influenced by somebody, but find out what makes you special," he told American Star magazine, when asked what advice he would like to impart.
Jason is used to dishing out tips, and is using his knowledge for his new venture as a judge on So You Think You Can Dance. He'll be sitting next to fellow new mentor Paula Abdul and returning judge Nigel Lythgoe.
When asked his biggest source of inspiration, Jason reveals his fans are everything to him.
"My fans. I want them to find themselves in my stories. When I'm in the studio, we're a team. I always try to put my best foot forward," he smiled.
The 25-year-old's newest track, Get Ugly, is already proving to be popular. The idea behind the song was all to do with how Jason reacts when he hears a "sick beat".
"It's about that ugly face you make when you hear that sick beat or something that just feels amazing. Just getting nasty and enjoying yourself," he explained.
