Brooklyn's finest just showed a little more love to his hometown. On Wednesday (July 12), Jay-Z announced two more shows to commemorate the opening of BK's new Barclays Center. In addition to the previously announced trio of concerts on September 28-30, due to popular demand Hov added shows for October 3 and October 4.
The Barclays will house the former New Jersey Nets, who will make their debut as the Brooklyn Nets this fall at the start of the 2013-2014 NBA season, but the new sports and entertainment venue is also gearing up to host concerts by Justin Bieber, Barbra Streisand and Neil Young in the coming year. Fittingly it will be Jay-Z who will christen the building on opening day. (Hov is not only a minority-owner of the Nets, but also director of Brooklyn Arena LLC, the company that owns Barclays.)
In an effort to accommodate fans who may not be able to afford the usual concert-going experience, Hov will be pricing more than 7,000 tickets under $30, for each of the five shows. "I'm going to open the building with a concert -- or a couple of concerts, actually," Jay-Z told Fox's "Good Day New York" last September, though he never confirmed the number of shows. "It's going to be more than about basketball; it's an entertainment arena."
There's no telling what Jay has planned for any of the five dates, but conventional wisdom tells you that he will make his homecoming more than memorable. Jay started out as an underground rapper in the borough's Marcy Projects back in the 1980s and once lived in the area's 560 State Street. He has since went on to become one of music's biggest draws releasing revered albums such as 1996's Reasonable Doubt, 2001's The Blueprint and last year's Watch the Throne with Kanye West.
Tickets for all five concerts will go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. and will be available through Ticket Master or the Barclays website.
