Jay-Z has rapped that he made the Yankees hat more famous than a Yankee can. While that may or may not be true, one thing that's indisputable is Hov's love of sports.
The hip-hop mogul made major headlines last year when, as a minority owner for the NBA's Nets, he helped facilitate a move to his native Brooklyn, and Jiggaman is once again putting his mark on the sports world: On Tuesday (April 2), news broke that New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Canó fired high-powered agent Scott Boras and signed with Roc Nation Sports, a company founded by Jay.
"Because of my love of sports, it was a natural progression to form a company where we can help top athletes in various sports the same way we have been helping artists in the music industry for years," Jay-Z said in a statement to ESPN.com.
The news comes just a day after Major League Baseball celebrated its opening day. "At this point in my career, I am ready to take a more active role in my endeavors on and off the field," the all-star second basement said in a statement. "I am confident that the pairing of Roc Nation Sports and CAA Sports will be essential in helping me accomplish my short- and long-term goals. I am making this important decision now so I can keep my focus on helping the Yankees succeed in 2013, while minimizing any distractions for me and my teammates."
Jay's Roc Nation Sports has partnered with Creative Artists Agency (CAA), a firm that represents sports stars Buster Posey and David Beckham. This isn't the first time the rap world and sports world have connected: Former NFL running back Ricky Williams once partnered with Master P's No Limit Sports, but in 2000, he terminated the deal after taking a huge financial hit.
Sources have told ESPN that Jay is planning to eventually become a certified agent himself in baseball, football and basketball, but there is a bit of conflict: In order for Hov to take on NBA clients, he would have to give up his ownership share in the Brooklyn Nets.
