Melbourne rockers Jet have truly hit the world stage.

They have been nominated for three MTV Music Video Awards and will perform at the awards show in Miami on August 29.
The lads have been nominated for Best Rock Video, Best New Artist in a Video and Best Editing in a Video for their hit Are You Gonna Be My Girl.

The song was No.1 on last year's Triple J Hottest 100 countdown, and has become widely known after being used in ad campaigns for Apple's iPod and Vodafone.

But the boys are up against some tough competition.

In the Best Rock Video category, they must beat The Darkness, Hoobastank, Evanescence and Linkin Park.

Jet's best-selling debut album Get Born is still hovering in the ARIA top 10 after almost a year in the charts.

The band is finishing its first headline tour of the US and is expected back in Australia next week.

And they've been attracting some star attention along the way -- we're told Starsky And Hutch star Owen Wilson was at one of their LA shows. Get Born has sold two million copies in the US.

New Zealand band Steriogram picked up four nominations for their acclaimed video for Walkie Talkie Man.

Rapper Jay-Z leads the awards charge with six nominations, while Beyonce, No Doubt, Usher and OutKast have five each.

Jet will join fellow performers Usher, Jessica Simpson and Hoobastank on the Miami stage.

The MTV Music Video Awards is usually the most entertaining show of the year. Last year it made headlines when Britney Spears and Madonna kissed onstage.

MTV Australia will broadcast the awards on August 30 at 9am and repeat it at 6pm that night.
