With vocal contribution from his sisters, Jimmy Rankin was the exceptional lead voice that brought The Rankin Family to widespread acclaim during the nineties.
After a series of hit songs and albums, the 1999 split of the Canadian Celtic sibling act placed the band's principal songwriter and guitarist at a musical crossroads.
From the headliner with The Rankin Family to the opening act, Jimmy has truly started over. But opening for big acts like Keith Urban and Carolyn Dawn Johnson last autumn helped gain the exposure he needs. Without a definitive pop sound, radio airplay has not been as forthcoming up to this point so the Cape Breton-born artist has been finding his way through touring.
Released in September 2003, his latest album, Handmade, has earned Rankin three East Coast Music Awards. Handmade is entirely acoustic, showcasing Rankin's evolution from Celtic folk with the family act to a more roots-rock sound. Recorded in Toronto, the album features acoustic instruments such as banjos, mandolins and dulcimers and a live feel. Since February, Rankin has been touring across Canada beginning in the east and then on to the west throughout March and April.
