Joey Bada$$ and his Pro Era crew were riding high off the release of their latest mixtape PEEP: The aPROcalypse, but today they are mourning the loss of group member Capital STEEZ.
He was 19 years old and at press time his cause of death is still unknown, but his last tweet, which came at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday read: "The end," leading many to believe that he took his own life.
The end.
"This unfortunate xmas eve.. Lost a best friend, a brother, a pro, a partner. Letting go is never easy.. May ur soul rest in peace Jamal..," Joey wrote on his Twitter on Monday (December 24). "RIP CAPITAL STEEZ!!! 7.7.93 - 12.24.12."
Steez broke out alongside Joey when he guested on the teen's ear-catching single "Survival Tactics" appearing on the track's second verse in February. The Brooklyn, New York MC released his debut mixtape AmeriKKKan Korruption in April and was featured on a number of tracks off PEEP, the mixtape that the PE crew dropped on Friday.
The news set-off a series of tweets from numerous members of STEEZ's Pro Era crew. "SICK TO MY STOMACH...," wrote Joey. "it just haven't been the same since my homies death... part of me still doesn't believe this."
On Sunday night, at approximately 10 p.m. Nyck Caution sent a tweet to his friend, hours before his death. "@CapitalSTEEZ_ yerrrrrrr! Where you at," he wrote.
"this can't be happening," he later messaged before eulogizing his partner-in-rhyme: "Long Live Steelo."
MTV News reached out to the NYPD, but at press time they could not release any information surrounding the incident.
