John Mayer says "coupling is a tricky thing".
The 35-year-old musician split with singer Katy Perry in March after dating on-and-off since last summer.
John has discussed romance and the ending of his relationship during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
"It was a very private relationship going in. It was a private relationship during and it's a private relationship, still. I can understand asking the question based on some previous answers I have given but I have finally learned how to put the wall between one thing and the other," John revealed. "I've been much happier since then. I'm on the same journey as everyone else. Coupling is a tricky thing."
Last year, John was forced to cancel his scheduled tour due to a throat injury. After the announcement, the star had to take a break from singing to ensure he recovered fully. John discussed how he is improving his health following the setback.
"[It was like] acid reflux, that's what happened. One half of it was caused by singing and the other half by what you are putting into your body. As you get older the body doesn't just shake everything off. It didn't help that I really love, loved, scotch. But it's just like a plying poison to your body. Plying shellac of poison, delicious, wonderful poison that makes you not care how late you're out till or where you're going. I had to say, 'I like singing and writing more than I like delicious scotch,'" he joked. "I'm a little more boring now."
