K. Michelle Blends 'Rhythm And Streets' On New Mixtape

Real Spit: Many credit 1990s DJ Ron G with being the first to successfully blend rhythm and blues with hip-hop, and now, more than 20 years later, it's impossible to imagine either genre without the other. Like Mary J. Blige and R. Kelly before her, K. Michelle is an R&B singer with plenty of street appeal. Need proof? Just check her new "Rhythm and Streets" mixtape 0 F---s Given.

"She got a real street swagger, crossed over with that R&B soul sound," 0 F---s Give's DJ Sense told Mixtape Daily. "So that's a prime example of what I'm talking about when I say 'rhythm and streets,' and it's doin' really good right now."

Though her voice is pretty, K. Michelle puts her harsh realities on her records. The Memphis, Tennessee, native was dropped from Jive Records before she was able to release her debut album. Now, she has found success as a castmember of VH1's new hit reality series "Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta." K. Michelle's newfound television popularity has helped shine light on her music career.

"I had been singing for so long, and no one was listening, I had been helping women who had gone through domestic violence, but no one paid attention," she told. "It wasn't enough controversy, so finally I figured, I don't have anything to lose. As long as I can get my music out and say what I need to say, that's all that matters."

K. Michelle addresses all the drama on 0 F---s opening track "U Gonna Learn Today." "They say I drink too much, curse too much/ I can be a little rough, but in God I trust," she sings before lamenting on her days working as a stripper and the nights she spends away from her son.

"Go Off" is a fiery barb tossed at K. Michelle's ex-boyfriend Memphitz, who she claims abused her, a charge which he denies. "Yeah I might be crazy, but I'm talented as f---/ And all I want to do is drink this jack in my cup," she croons in auto-tune over Kirko Bangz's "Drank in My Cup" instrumental.

The 24-track mixtape does feature a number of drama-filled odes, and quite frankly it's what the sexy siren does best. On "Shut Up," she sings, "Would be lying if I said that I gave a f---/ But y'all wasn't in that room when he f---ed me up" and with that K. Michelle taps into her innermost torment and finds her greatest strength: turning her pain into her medicine.
