The couple wed in India last month, near to where Russell proposed on New Year’s Eve last year. The ceremony was traditional and intimate, and the pair worked hard to make sure the details of it weren’t leaked.
However, the secrecy caused a number of unusual rumours to surface about the nuptials. It was claimed the pair had gifted each other wild animals to mark their special day, and that a man-eating tiger had threatened to halt proceedings when it broke into the compound.
Katy and Russell have now appeared together as a married couple for the first time, taking to the purple carpet at the MTV European Music Awards (EMAs) in Madrid last night. The American singer admitted finding the stories funny, and said neither she nor Russell took any notice of them.
“Actually, I was too busy getting married [to notice],” she giggled. “I don't mind my wedding has turned into kind of a myth. It's kind of cool. We kept it kind of private, so when we heard some of the things that were going around we were like, 'Ah, that's hilarious.' [The wedding] was fantastic.”
Katy wore a red minidress with her hair scraped back for her arrival, with Russell opting for a smart suit with open-necked shirt. The singer performed her track Firework at the event, and also picked up the Best Video award for California Gurls.
Eva Longoria Parker hosted the event, and lived up to her promise to wow with her outfits. She donned ten different sets of clothes, arriving in a short black number designed by her friend Victoria Beckham.
Eva later changed into a giant ham costume, in a nod to the meat dress Gaga sported at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) earlier this year.
The star wore a demure long dress while talking to Katy on stage, only for the singer to rip off her skirt leaving Eva in just a glittery corset. Other outfits included a bright red minidress and a plunging black dress with a feather skirt.
