Katy Perry is religious to stop herself becoming a "menace to society".
The US singer's first record was a gospel one and her parents are both pastors. She is happy to talk about God, explaining have belief has helped her through the hardest parts of her life.
"I try and keep my connection with the G-O-D or with a power that's bigger than me. It's important - otherwise, you don't have any kind of accountability," she told W magazine. "If you think, Hey, at the end of it all I am just going to be dust, or I have no soul or whatever, why not just be a menace to society? For me, accountability works."
One of the hard experiences Katy has been through over the last couple of years was her divorce from Russell Brand. He told her he wanted to end their union via text message, but she still won't talk ill of him.
"Of course. I really loved it," she said of being married. "It was a new, fun, exciting journey. But I like how I am now, and I think all things happen for a reason."
The 28-year-old singer's latest record is called Prism and she is particularly proud of the track Roar. It has become a female anthem and she hopes her young fans will listen to it and feel empowered.
"People talk about bullying, but you can be your own bully in some ways. You can be the person who is standing in the way of your success, and that was the case for me. I was having a great professional streak, but personally, I was really immature, so I had to balance those things out," she said, alluding to her failed marriage.
"If you are not happy with something, you should change it. So I went to a lot of therapy, and finally, I am able to speak up for myself: You are going to hear me roar!"
Katy has now come out the other side of her personal crisis and is happy with her boyfriend John Mayer. She has gushed about his mental prowess and musical ability over the last few months and has now hinted she had her eye on him for some time.
"I actually am dating my crush. I had a crush on him for a long time, and it just so happens we fit together great," she enthused.
