Katy Perry believes eating dirt "builds character".
The singer has been experiencing relationship heartache, after her husband Russell Brand filed for divorce after just 14 months last year. Katy has documented the breakdown of her marriage and her recent tour in her big screen movie Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D.
She believes personal struggles make a person stronger and she is happy to show fans her vulnerable side.
"I think sometimes, when you eat the dirt a little bit, it builds character," she told British magazine Heat. "I'm OK with being humbled, even the hard way sometimes, and I don't like to paint the perfect picture. I like to be able to show everything and make sure that people see that they too don't have to be absolutely problem-free and perfect in order to get where they want to go."
Katy says the past few months have taught her to cherish life. The 27-year-old star is now making the most of what every new day brings.
"The main thing that I've learned about myself in the past couple of years is that there's a new day every day, so take advantage of it, because yesterday is gone," she explained.
Katy is famed for her outrageous outfits and outspoken nature. She makes no apologies for her brash character and flamboyant wardrobe. The singer has vowed to stay true to who she is when it comes to her career.
"I think people know that I'm a little bit more than just the girl next door. I have a little bit more spice to me and that is how I will continue to be, because I have to hold onto that artistic integrity because that's what got me here," she added. "I'll only ever speak the truth, and sometimes that's hard to swallow."
