CULVER CITY, California — It was an overcast evening and an unseasonably chilly climate for L.A., but the stars shone bright for our 2013 MTV Movie Awards red carpet. The trends we delighted in were characteristically unpredictable and ran the gamut from dudes rolling up in jeans and tees to full-glam, floor-grazing gowns from Hollywood and fashion's finest.
Long-sleeved dresses were a huge trend, from presenter Amanda Seyfried in her bandana-print dress with the shirttail hem to Kerry Washington in a gorgeous, black-and-orange Michael Kors gown with a long, dramatic train-cum-bustle situation. The glowing Kim Kardashian was resplendent in her black, blousy Saint Laurent Paris ensemble, and her baby bump was set off beautifully by bold, gold jewelry. It definitely makes you wonder how much involvement father-to-be Kanye West had in the selection.
Zoe Saldana also wore sleek, black sleeves in a dramatic, floral, embroidered Givenchy dress with a thigh-high slit that was one of our favorite looks of the night. Performer Selena Gomez also wore long sleeves on the red carpet with a gloriously abbreviated hem on her Julien Macdonald gold, beaded dress. Speaking of performers, we can't forget to mention Macklemore's incredible, fringed, brocade matador cape that featured spectacular movement during his performance of "Can't Hold Us." It totally harkens to the 2 Chainz cape from the Grammys, and we believe this calls for a cape-off!
Denim was also a big look, and while many of the fellas swanned down the step-and-repeat in jeans, namely "Teen Wolf" star Taylor Posey and Seth Rogen, we loved the twist of Quvenzhané Wallis' light denim cover-up just as we adored the playful patchwork of Chloe Moretz's Louis Vuitton sleeveless number. Not sure if you noticed, but the fashion world was aflame at the controversy in Wallis' choice of purse. Instead of her characteristic pooch pocketbook, this time the "Beasts of the Southern Wild" actress opted for a cat handbag to stow her awards-show belongings. Scandal!
A notable color trend was the surprising jolt of white. Not to be horrifically biased, but we loved MTV "House of Style" host Karlie Kloss in her white, two-piece Cushnie et Ochs, and not to be outdone, VH1's "Big Morning Buzz" host Carrie Keagan was wearing a cream Hervé Leger bandage dress (pssst ... the trend was so popular that "Pitch Perfect" star Anna Camp was wearing the same dress!). "The Fast and the Furious" star Jordana Brewster was also in skintight, blinding white with a single strap, and Trailblazer Award winner Emma Watson was a slight outlier to the white theme in her white, black and blue Maxime Simoens dress, but she looked elegant as always.
As for curveballs, we saw Ke$ha in vintage, fringed, floral overlay flared trousers and a big, floppy felt hat and jewelry from her own line, a collaboration with Charles Albert. Hayley Williams did high-street-high-style proud in a black Zara onesie with black, buckled Top Shop boots and we all, of course, loved Snoop Lion's lionhead Jesus piece, coupled with his crimson fur coat. The accessory that stole the show, however, has to be "Pitch Perfect" actress Hana Mae Lee's enormous, crushed cigarette-butt sculpture hat. The cutout Marco Marco dress blessedly did little to detract from the chapeau centerpiece.

Rebel Wilson's surreal costume changes obviously beg some mention, considering that we're talking about a kaleidoscope of wonder ranging from a hot-pink koala suit to an "Iron Mangina" outfit as well as a cutout, um, architectural dress that did much to accentuate the wealth of areola with which she's been blessed. There was also a pleather, crocodile-embossed peplum bodysuit that looked sublime.
The menswear was on-trend, from Eddie Redmayne's distressed moto to Jamie Foxx's Drome leather jacket, but we were particularly taken with "Star Trek" star Zachary Quinto's saturated DSquared and "Avengers" villain Tom Hiddleston's sleek navy stunner. But the suit that killed everything dead and destroyed every suit that came before it was, of course, Will Ferrell's all-over print DOLLA DOLLA BILLS Y'ALL suit that featured a vest. All in all, an undeniably winsome night.
