Speaking in an exclusive interview with MTV the international megastar opened up about her rise to fame and the bumps on the way.
As a teenager Gaga moved out of her parents' house in a respectable area of Manhattan by the Lincoln Centre in favour of the grimy lower East Side.
'It was like I needed to f**k myself up a bit and lick the ground for a couple of years to understand New York City and understand a whole different side of the pavement,' she said.
The 25-year-old also admitted her father was furious when he came to watch one of her first live shows in NYC.
'I just remember my dad came and he got really, really upset and he didn't talk to me for weeks,' she said.
In the hour-long interview Lady Gaga: Inside The Outside the Poker Face singer got emotional when talking about her family's struggle to make it in America.
'My dad was the first one to go to college,' she said, tears forming in her eyes. Gaga also confessed to being bullied at school.
'I am the perpetual underdog,' she said.
