Lou Bega's 1999 hit 'Mambo No 5' has become the 154th song to sell 1,000,000 copies in the UK 15 years after its release.
German artist Lou Bega used the original 1949 song by Cuban artist Pérez Prado as the base for his 1999 reconstruction of the song.
Bega's 'Mambo No 5' was a number one hit in the UK and Australia and reached number 3 in the USA in 1999.
Speaking about his million benchmark achievement Bega told officialcharts.com, "It feels great, I'm amazed, I'm really, really amazed. It must be a new generation that discovered it. A British friend told me it is very popular at weddings so maybe that's why."
He also said he never expected the song to be a hit. "I remember when I started to write the song, and I finished it, you have a gut feeling you know, and I told myself: either it's going in the dustbin of history or it will open doors for me – I really remember thinking that very vividly."
Lou Bega has released five albums. His most recent in 2014 'A Little Bit Of 80s' featured covers of songs by Culture Club, Sade, Dexys Midnight Runners and KC & The Sunshine Band.
The UK's 153rd million seller was Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan's 'Especially For You' in mid-December.
