Mac Miller's new MTV2 show premieres Tuesday night, and while the Pittsburgh rapper doesn't quite know what to expect from his reality TV debut, he's excited for fans to get to know the rest of his crew. As he sees it, they'll be picking up where they left off with their all-access YouTube clips when "Mac Miller and the Most Dope Family" kicks off.
"[At first], I was skeptical about doing a TV show because I don't wanna be 'the guy from the TV show' — I'm an artist and I wanna make music," Mac told of agreeing to make the series. "But we did YouTube videos that were behind-the-scenes, and this is kinda taking that a little further. Instead of on YouTube, it's on TV now.
"I'm excited to see what happens," he added, noting that his skepticism got the best of him at first. "I wasn't excited until [recently], because the whole time I'm thinking, 'Man, this show's gonna suck. It's me — what do people wanna look at me for? This isn't exciting, I'm not Kanye West, I'm Mac Miller; it's just me and the homeys.' And then I saw some clips from it, and it was kinda tight 'cause it looks so MTV-y. It looks like an MTV show, so to see my life in that formula was kind of weird but it's gonna be tight."
The six-part series will follow the Macadelic rapper and four friends as they settle in Los Angeles to record his sophomore album, Watching Movies With the Sound Off. There's Quentin (the business mastermind), Jimmy (the creative one), Peanut (the fashion entrepreneur) and Big Dave (the NFL player-turned-bodyguard).
"If you're a real Mac Miller fan, you [already] know all of my homeys, because we've been homeys this whole time and they've been there, so you've seen them," he explained. "But I think it's interesting for the people who know less of me to really see how it all operates and how it all goes down."
One of Mac's favorite moments on the show will feature an appearance from his longtime friend (read: alter ego) Larry Lovestein. "Larry Lovestein is a good friend of mine and he's a jazz artist that put out a project I'm in huge support of," Mac said, keeping a straight face. "I've known him basically since I was born and I got to help him be on an MTV show, so I'm excited for the episode to come out where the world meets someone I've known my whole life."
Catch "Mac Miller and the Most Dope Family" Tuesdays at 11:30 p.m. ET, right after "Guy Code," on MTV2.
