Mademoiselle Caro & Frank Garcia return to the musical fold this spring with a new album. Part acoustic, part discotronic, the French duo have stepped up and delivered a luscious, mature hookladenpop album. 'Left' is brimming with dreamy sensibilities, crisp grooving rhythms and a soft melancholic heartfelt touch. It expertly follows their stylish debut set 'Pain Disappears' (2008) - a critically-acclaimed album that spawned one of Resident Advisor's Top Remixes of 2008 with Radioslave's massive strung-out, Berlin-battering re-rub of 'Dead Souls'.
Parisian DJ and songwriter Mademoiselle Caro has been a key resident DJ at the legendary Rex Club in Paris for over five years. She grew up playing Bowie, Joy Division and Bauhaus records in Perpignan, before meeting Franck in a small local club in 2006 and deciding to write a single.
"Franck told me I should definitely have a new song or something to do with my DJing - it was our first single, 'Far Away', she explains. "It was also our first song together, and my first song too." With Ivan Smagghe an early supporter and Damian Lazarus' label Crosstown Rebels signing it, it was only one more step for the duo to move to Ben Watt's Buzzin' Fly for a fully-fledged album.
While Caro cut her teeth on the underground, Franck Garcia found early success within the
mainstream. "In Paris during the nineties I wrote a lot of pop arrangements for people.
It was difficult for me because I had a lot of success in 1998, but it didn't feel like me - it was just me and a friend messing around. I left Paris in search of something new and real,' he states. Back home he discovered the young Caro breaking tracks on the Perpignan underground club scene.
Distilling the subtle but defiant dancefloor essence of their debut, 'Left' condenses their sound into sparkling, four-minute pop vignettes. "I think the electronic structures in the new album have disappeared a little," agrees Franck, "It's more pop, more organic, also more acoustic - but always with a dense dance groove".
This year sees Mademoiselle Caro & Franck Garcia also unveil a renewed live show, following memorable live gigs in London and Paris in 2008 as a razor-sharp 4-piece combo - be sure to catch them this year!
Still beautifully restrained, yet as playful, groovy and tunefully inspirational as ever, it is great to have them back.
