Not everyone is applauding Reebok's decision to drop Rick Ross after the Maybach mastermind's rape-lyric controversy. Rozay's rap protégé Meek Mill is a likely Ross defender, and on Friday morning (April 12), the Dreamchaser hopped on Twitter to voice his annoyance with the sneaker giant.
"Reeboks right next 2 FILA when it come 2 sneaks that sh-- corny," he messaged on the social networking site, before showing a smidge of support for Swizz Beatz and Tyga, who also have deals with the shoe company. "I was only was feeling swizz & tyga projects... #boom."
After mounting public pressure, Reebok terminated their deal with the rapper. "Reebok holds our partners to a high standard, and we expect them to live up to the values of our brand. Unfortunately, Rick Ross has failed to do so," Reebok told in a written statement. "While we do not believe that Rick Ross condones sexual assault, we are very disappointed he has yet to display an understanding of the seriousness of this issue or an appropriate level of remorse. At this time, it is in everyone's best interest for Reebok to end its partnership with Mr. Ross."
The rap star conjured images of rape for many listeners with his verse on Rocko's mixtape single "U.O.E.N.O." In the song Ross rhymes about putting molly in a woman's champagne and then having sex with her, while repeating the phrase "she ain't even know it."
The veteran MC attempted to clear the drama in March during a New Orleans radio interview when he called the lyric controversy a "misunderstanding" and then apologized after women's-rights organization Ultra Violet staged a protest in front of Reebok's flagship store in New York City on April 4.
Shortly after the news broke that Reebok had taken action against Ross, Ultra Violet issued a statement to MTV News thanking the shoe company for taking a stand and declaring the decision "a huge victory for women."
