Miley Cyrus is driven to succeed professionally by her "haters".
The 20-year-old singer appeared in TV show Hannah Montana as a child which led to movie offers and a music career.
However she still wants to conquer more of the world thanks to people telling her she can't.
"Haters keep me mad motivated," she told Entertainment Tonight in Canada. "That makes me want to do even better."
The pop star admits that her Disney character wasn't necessarily someone she would have been a fan of at that age.
However she felt the need to hide her real personality as a sign of respect to her colleagues.
"Once I left my show I didn't want anyone around that was going to tell me the way that I was going to do things," Miley explained. "I wanted to go make mistakes, go be who I was going to be. Have no one that I had to answer yes or no to."
The We Can't Stop singer is aware that the general public is interested in her personal life.
However she thinks it's ridiculous when people try to decode messages in her work.
"The funniest thing is definitely someone listening to a song and being like, 'oh that's definitely about what she went through here'," she commented.
The entertainer is currently engaged to The Hunger Games actor Liam Hemsworth.
The couple has sparked concern their relationship has hit a rocky patch as they have not spent much time together in public recently.
"You don't know half of what I've been through. You think I'm crazy, you don't know half of it," she added about what she reveals in her tunes.
